“Genes and Cells” Journal

“Genes and Cells” is a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Since 2006, the Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation has recommended the journal for publiсation of doctoral thesis abstract.

The journal was founded by the Human Stem Cells Institute in 2005 as a scientific and analytical and was entitled "Cell Transplantology and Tissue Engineering" (CTTE) to cover the results of biomedical research related to cell-based technologies.

By the current time the journal has acquired a wider target audience: whereas previously the main readers of the journal were biotechnologists, and experts in the field of molecular and cell biology, nowadays the target audience has grown substantially to include medical practitioners.

Furthermore, scientific developments led to the realization that the theme of the journal should be significantly expanded to include adjacent fundamental and applied areas. The vector of development of modern medicine cannot be imagined without medical genetics and gene technologies. The borders of the scientific field of "Regenerative Medicine" have been expanded beyond "cells and tissues."

In this regard, the journal was re-registered in 2014 under the new name of "Genes and Cells". The journal has expanded its subject matter, as well as its editorial board, by attracting highly qualified domestic and foreign experts. The journal’s new editor-in-chief is Roman Deev, M.D.

The main purpose of “Genes and Cells” scientific and practical journal is to form a scientific-educational and informational environment covering advanced gene and cell technologies aimed at solving human health problems. To accomplish this, the journal provides the target audience with quality information about the current status of advanced research and developments in the framework of basic and applied gene and cell technologies, tissue engineering, biomaterial science, medical genetics, and cell biology.

These studies, for the most part, are done at the intersection of several biological and medical disciplines. Scientific directions in the medical and health care fields of interest include, among others: transplantology, immunology, oncology and carcinogenesis, hematology, embryology, reproductology, histology, developmental biology, and pathological anatomy - in terms of studying adaptive-compensatory changes at the tissue, cell and gene levels...

Scientific works, acceptable for publication in the scientific journal “Genes and Cells”, should correspond to one of the columns that are wider than in traditional academic journals, including “expert opinion”, “cell technology news”, “reviews”, “original research”, “clinical experience”, ”discussion and theoretical works”, and “stem cell business”. The quality of publications is ensured by “double-blind” review, scrutiny for plagiarism, as well as attention to possession of permits for conducting research.

Strict adherence to the accepted standards of publication of scientific materials in the journal has led to its inclusion in the leading Russian and international bibliographic and abstract databases: eLIBRARY (www.elibrary.ru), Scopus (www.scopus.com), Ebsco (www.ebsco.com).

The main directions of the journal’s further development include:

  • transitioning to a bilingual format (English and Russian) to expand the journal’s target audience;
  • expansion of the Editorial Board by recruiting reputable foreign experts;
  • including the journal in the PubMed.com informational resource with compliance to the requirements of international standards and criteria for selecting citation indices which are sufficient for inclusion in the Web of Science.
  • modernizing the journal’s website (by introducing technical features that allow authors, editors and experts to work with the manuscripts in an electronic mode).

“Genes and Cells” scientific and practical journal has its own
website which performs the role, in addition to being an archive of PDF versions of journal articles, of being an information and discussion portal for the target audience (through a constantly-updated newsline, online diaries (blogs) of the leading Russian and foreign specialists in the field of gene and cell technologies, etc.). The journal incorporates the principle of “open access” to all publications, except for the four most recent issues.
